China Molybdenum Powder Price - October 20, 2020

Molybdenum market quotation in China: tungsten carbide rods molybdenum powder, ammonium molybdate and ammonium heptamolvbdate prices are unchanged from previous trading day on October 20, 2020 as both buyers and sellers enter the market slowly with limited deals concluded. 

The molybdenum concentrate market is generally in a weak balance between supply and demand. The decline in international molybdenum prices and the gradual return to calm in the steel market are the main reasons why molybdenum companies are currently unable to raise their quotations, and orders are limited.

The ferromolybdenum market is under pressure. In addition to the poor performance of steel companies’ bidding volume and price, the price of molybdenum concentrate is at a relatively high position, which also leads to factors that reduce the profits of smelting companies.

In the molybdenum chemical tungsten carbide plates and its products market, on-site trading activity increased slightly. This was mainly due to the increased enthusiasm of terminal customers to receive goods. At present, the quotations of holders have basically remained strong and there is little room for bargaining.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s average daily output of crude steel was 3.085 million tons in September 2020, average daily output of pig iron was 2.526 million tons, and steel was 3.935 million tons. From January to September 2020, the capacity utilization rate of the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry was 81.6%, an increase of 2.2% year-on-year; the capacity utilization rate of the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry in the first three quarters was 77.7%, a year-on-year decrease of 2.2%.

China’s Zhangyuan Tungsten released its new offers for the second half of February: black tungsten concentrate (WO3≥55%) was quoted at $14,444.4 per ton, up $158.7 per tone from early February; scheelite Tungsten Weights concentrate (WO3≥55%) was quoted at $14,206.3 per ton, up $158.7 per ton; APT was quoted at $249.3 per mtu, up $3.6 per mtu compared with the first half of this month. 

In addition, due to the continuous increase in the prices of cemented carbide raw materials, the company's production costs have increased significantly. Zhangyuan Tungsten's cemented carbide products will be implemented at the new price from February 22, 2021.

However, with the increase of downstream inquiries, it was difficult to find low-priced sources of goods in the market. The market of molybdenum chemical industry and its products was tepid. Prices were basically in a reasonable range, and end customers mainly purchased by order. 

In February 2021, the national ex-factory prices for industrial producers increased by 1.7% year-on-year and 0.8% tungsten carbide burrs month-on-month; industrial producer purchasing prices increased by 2.4% year-on-year and 1.2% month-on-month. On average from January to February, the ex-factory price of industrial producers increased by 1.0% year-on-year, and the purchase price of industrial producers increased by 1.6%, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
